The magic in the little things

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

People often hear the advice to "live in the moment" if they want to grasp a substantial piece of happiness. Yet, as I've experienced and observed in many others, there can be confusion about what it truly means to "be present."

Being present isn't just a catchphrase; it's a profound state of awareness in which you fully engage with each aspect of your life and relish every moment to the utmost. Our brains are wired to focus on one thing at a time, making it impossible to engage in meaningful conversations if you're mentally scrolling through your to-do list or preoccupied with your phone. It's crucial to eliminate distractions during your current activity to vividly perceive all its nuances. Over time, not only will you perform at your best, but you'll also cultivate new skills in concentration because you're fully immersed in one task.

Another common obstacle to embracing the present is our tendency to dwell on the past and future. In both cases, when we do this, we miss out on the beautiful moments unfolding around us—like savoring the aroma of freshly brewed coffee or appreciating the kindness in someone's smile. Dwelling on the future often leads to anxiety, while although setting long-term goals and planning is essential, it's unhealthy to try to control the uncontrollable aspects of tomorrow. Likewise, while learning from past failures is valuable, endlessly replaying them can blind us to what's happening in the here and now.

Some individuals struggle with maintaining a positive mindset, often finding themselves trapped in a cycle of negative thinking about situations or people. This is a common mistake that hinders us from leading peaceful and calmer lives. Negative thoughts are natural, and everyone experiences them. However, it's your choice whether you embrace or project them into your life. Every situation and person has both positive and negative aspects, and many tend to focus on the negatives without realizing the harm it brings to their journey. Even if it's challenging for you, making an effort to see the bright side in everything will cleanse your mind and yield numerous benefits.

Once you've learned the art of being present in each moment, you'll discover the magic concealed within the little things. You'll realize that the happiness derived from spending time with your loved ones cannot be equated to the fleeting excitement of purchasing that coveted sofa. The satisfaction and fulfillment stemming from love, travel, and pursuing your passions are enduring, while the thrill of buying a new possession fades within weeks, days, or sometimes even hours. Marketing and consumerism may have misled us into thinking that more money equates to greater happiness, but the truth is that happiness is more affordable and attainable than we've been led to believe.

I understand that our lives are now bustling at a pace far swifter than previous generations, with an overwhelming list of daily tasks. This frantic pace often causes us to overlook life's most precious moments. Yet, the solution to reclaiming more time is within your grasp. Begin by allocating less time to your devices. We're more interconnected than ever before. Consider my grandmother, who, in her teenage years around 1946, had to wait months for news about her sister in Havana. Why, then, do we feel the need to instantaneously respond to every notification while engaged in other activities? I firmly believe that most things can wait. They can wait because, during those moments of non-response, we are experiencing, evolving, and truly living.

I urge you to embark on this journey today: one marked by positivity, clarity, presence, and happiness.
